Summer at the Sarnoff!

We’re very happy to have two terrific students working with us this summer to help us keep moving forward on some ongoing projects – and help us find new ways to connect to our campus audiences. We checked in with Melanie and Stenneth during their first week of work, and we’ll continue to do so over the summer.

Melanie:

What is your major?

I am a rising sophomore and I am an interactive multimedia major. I have an interest in graphic design and will be picking it up as my minor.

What is something that drew you in to wanting to work at the Sarnoff Collection?

I have been involved in technology heavily throughout my life and I find the work that David Sarnoff did very fascinating and revolutionary for that time period. He is one of the important 20th century figures who pushed for and supported innovation. The museum captures that history of the progression of technology.

What are your personal goals for the Sarnoff collection here at The College of New Jersey, as well as for yourself?

My personal goal here at the Sarnoff collection is to work on keeping our social media pages up to date and interesting! As for my own growth I want to be able to apply everything I learn from my time here at the Sarnoff collection to my major and to my future work, whether that’s the museum field or another area.

Stenneth:

What is your major?

I am an incoming transfer student and will be starting at TCNJ in the fall. I will be majoring in Computer Science.

What is something that drew you in to wanting to work at the Sarnoff Collection?

What drew me in was David Sarnoff’s work with communication – for example, the telegraph he operated to maintain contact with the Titanic. Sarnoff took a series of niche technologies like the telegraph and turned them into a communications empire: radio, black and white and then color television were the basis of RCA’s great success.

What are your personal goals for the Sarnoff collection here at The College of New Jersey, as well as for yourself?

Well, for starters, we have received numerous donations which we are very thankful for and that is what I primarily want to focus my attention on while I am here at the Sarnoff. I’m working with the Sarnoff’s collection database and some spreadsheets and other tools I’m building myself so we can get these donated items accurately cataloged and stored. For myself I want to just take what I learn from this experience and be able to apply that knowledge within my major.

Our thanks to Melanie and Stenneth for interviewing one another; it’s great to see them already working together!

Please check us out on social media and please come see our Vinyl Videos and Innovations that Changed the World exhibits: we’re open all summer long (excluding holidays) Wednesdays 1-5 and Sundays 1-3.
